Two-Toned Antique Dresser

Yesterday, I had another sale of my painted furniture and vintage finds at my house and, I think it went really, really well!  One thing that should have been for sale on Saturday was this gorgeous antique dresser, but...I just could not part with it.

All of you that paint and sell furniture knows how this is. Luckily, it doesn't happen too often, but every once in a while there is a piece that you just cannot let go. The good news, is that my husband loved the dresser, too. Plus, in order to keep it, I brought two other pieces that were in my dining room out to my sale, so it all sort of worked out.

I originally found this dresser at the thrift store a couple of weeks ago. It was structurally in fantastic condition and very, very reasonably priced.

Normally, when I run over to the thrift store (which is just a couple of minutes away from my home) I just have whatever, not fancy, shorts and a tee shirt on. Of course, though, on this day I had just gotten back from an appointment and was dressed pretty decently. So it was pretty hysterical as the guys from the store and I were attempting to cram the dresser into the back of my SUV and it started pouring! Totally not your average rain...I was drenched head to toe in a matter of a couple minutes. So, so worth it though!

Here is the before:

Anyway, I loved the wood grain on the drawers and wanted to preserve them the best I could. I knew from the very beginning that I was not going to paint them. After I removed the hardware and gave the drawers a good cleaning I wiped them down with some Howard's Restor-A-Finish. I continue to be impressed with this product!

I painted the base of the dresser with a really deep cream color that I had on hand. and lightly distressed to show off the fantastic feet. By the way, I'm completely in love with the cream colored paint selections by Valspar lately.

Lastly, I finished off the piece with the most spectacular glass hardware I have ever seen. Seriously love these and they are my favorite! They are so intricate and well made! I think they are the perfect finish to this dresser. You can find them at D. Lawless Hardware. And, they are only $1.96 a knob. Pretty amazing right!

So, now this dresser has a permanent home in my dining room, which I have made a couple of (minor) changes too. I'll be sure to share soon!

  4. Well that is most definitely a keeper!!!
It happens to me ALL the time actually - with almost every piece - but I find if I keep one around long enough I'll eventually be able to sell it ( because in the meantime some other keeper has snuck it's way in )
You did a gorgeous job - the wood looks perfect and you deserve to enjoy it!
