Fab Furniture Flippin' Contest with Velvet Finishes

This is a sponsored post.

I'm so excited to share my latest entry for The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest with you all! This tends to be my very favorite part of each month as we have some amazing sponsors; many of which are new to me.

This month we worked with Velvet Finishes and, I am officially in love. Check out their website for a complete list of their rich colors. This is truly a user friendly paint, with very little prep, which was a wonderful bonus.

My project piece was structurally sound, but needed personality and life added to it. Someone in the past had painted it brown and it was just so incredibly drab and it just didn't do justice to the beautiful lines and details.

Even though it isn't required, I did sand my piece before I cleaned it with the VF Ready product. My reasoning was that the previous application of paint was very drippy and I wanted to remove as much of the imperfections as possible.

You can see my step by step progress below, but basically, after prepping the armoire I gave it two coats of VF paint in Tranquil, a gorgeous, rich teal. I then sanded it with a very fine grit and did some decorative painting. First, I applied a wash of Rococo (a creamy white) mixed with water and then I used a gold gilding liquid on the door appliques. After another light sanding, I finished the entire piece with a coat of Protect.

The whitewashing and gilding gave the piece a wonderfully aged feel. I wanted the armoire to seem like it had originally been painted this way and had gracefully aged over time.

The inside of the cabinet got painted and distressed, too for a fresh and unified look.

I am loving this latest addition to our home! It's especially perfect since our old farmhouse has zero storage!
