This project was a first for us here at Number Fifty-Three. We had a request from a client to turn her antique dresser (that had been in the family for a few generations) into a kitchen island.
This was the perfect repurpose project to keep a piece with history still relevant in a modern and busy home. We were so happy to have created this and, although time consuming, it went rather smoothly and easily.
We started with a few repairs to shore up the piece as a whole and fix some damage to the back of the dresser. While we had the back open we added a shelf where the bottom drawer had once been.
We then created the top using several pieces of wood, cut to size, dowel pins and glue.
You can see we accounted for an overhang to accommodate chairs and further secured with decorative wood braces.
Lastly, we painted, stained and added several coats of poly.
This piece is a bit small as it was going into a narrow kitchen, but can be customized as need be. We currently have a large sideboard on tap for our own kitchen island.
Additionally, we are sharing another project over at Jennifer Rizzo Design Company. We'd love to have you check it out!
