{Glazing Furniture} Primitive Country Style Dresser

*I was compensated for this post with supplies, however all content, thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don't know why I'm drawn to furniture sometimes. Even when a piece may look exceptionally bad I will still drag it home (all the while getting strange looks from the thrift store employees). A couple of people that work at my favorite store completely know that I paint and sell furniture. Those that don't most likely think that I have a crazy hoard of bizarre and mismatched things in my home (and I know this to be true, because those couple of employees that know what I do straight up asked me why I am always buying so much furniture).

Anyway, I recently found this desk, and while it was pretty hideous it was structurally in fantastic shape and I could see the potential.  Also, for some strange reason I only checked the top drawer before I bought it. I never do that. And when I got it home I discovered that the middle drawer was lined with a newspaper from 1968 and crammed with hubcaps. Totally random, right?

One of the things that I loved about this dresser was it's simple, primitive and handmade shape. Because of that, I decided to go with a country feel and finish.

After some cleaning, patching and sanding, I started out by painting the entire dresser with General Finishes paint in Brick Red. It has a more subdued tone than the Holiday Red I have used in the past.

Typically, to get a rustic, country look I would do lots of distressing, but I didn't want to reveal the original white paint underneath. Instead, I decided to use glaze (General Finishes Pitch Black). It gives a wonderful aged and time worn feel to furniture.

I've used glaze several times now and it is wonderful for projects like this and also, for projects that you are not happy with the effect of sanding (like the Red Glazed Painted Vintage Bench I did last month.)

Lastly, the hardware... Since the hardware that came with the dresser was covered in paint (and didn't give the right feel anyway) I decided to raid my stash of vintage hardware that I have pulled off of other furniture pieces.

I gave them an update with some Antique Gold Rub 'n Buff and I shared the easy transformation on Facebook...

The dresser is for sale and I think it would make the most perfect entry piece. The deep sturdy drawers are ideal for storing hats, shoes and bags...
