Number Fifty-Three: Rustic & Reclaimed Wall Hanging & Contributor Post

I love transforming cast offs into something new and unexpected and this wall hanging totally fits the bill.

You just need a few supplies: reclaimed wood (I used the front of an old dresser drawer), sanding block, stain, glaze or wood and a brush or rag to apply it, two cans, drill and drill bit, twine, scissors, saw tooth hangers, and wildflowers or plants.

Since I was using an old drawer I first has to remove the front using a hammer and flat screwdriver. Give the wood a good sanding and cleaning and paint or stain with the color of your choice. I ended up using Pitch Black Glaze from General Finishes just to deepen the wood and even out the tone.

Next, flip over the board and attach the saw tooth hangers. Then, clean out two cans and very, very carefully drill two holes, in the back, large enough to thread the twine through. NOTE: I found it easier to make in indent with an awl so that the drill bit had a place to rest. While you have the drill out you may also need to drill corresponding holes into the wood. I was able to avoid this step by using the existing holes from where the drawer pulls had been.

Thread the twine through the holes in the cans and then through the holes in the wood. Tie into a knot in the back and trim any excess.

Lastly, hang on the wall and fill with beautiful summer flowers or plants.

One thing that I really love about this project is that is can fit into any style home. It has a simple modern feel with the clean lines and use of metal, but it is equally welcoming in a country house.
