Chalkboard Painted Books & Autumn Coffee Table

Morning everyone!  All I have to say is thank goodness it is starting to feel like fall around here in New England. It makes the whole, "let's decorate with pumpkins and gourds" so much more festive.

I'm getting my home already for an upcoming fall tour and I thought I would give you all a little glimpse at what I have been up to.

I started this weekend with my coffee table. And yes, this is totally a different coffee table than I had a month ago. What can I say? I paint and sell furniture. I keep my favorites.

Anyway, as part of the coffee table styling, I did a project that I am completely obsessed with now. I chalkboard painted some old books. I know. I will literally stop at nothing when it comes to painting things with chalkboard paint. But this is seriously awesome, and easy and super affordable.

Just grab yourself some old books, chalkboard paint (I used Martha Stewart brand), a paintbrush, chalk and a rag.

All I did was lay the books open flat with the covers facing up, applied two thin coats of the chalkboard paint (letting it completely dry in between). When the last coat was dry I rubbed the covers with the side of a piece of chalk and wiped them down with a rag.

The possibilities are endless with this one, friends. Honestly.

So, I decided to really change things ups this year and go with a black, white and touches of metallic autumn décor. Who needs orange? Not this blogger!

On the other side of my coffee table I filled a large glass vase with black and white Indian corn. I know. Are you thinking, how is that possible? The black corns are from a favorite shop of mine (locals: Cat's Cradle in South Hadley) and the white corn? I simply painted some that were naturally red with white chalk paint. Super easy.

What do you all think I'm kind of happy with the direction this whole theme is going right now. I may even tackle my mantle today.

  1. Well Angela I am glad I visited today :-) I love your baby Indian corn displayed in the glass, pretty touch. The painted old books with the blackboard paint is clever, they sure look stunning. Philadelphia is still lingering in the 70's but I'm inspired for Fall decorating. Enjoy your week and I look forward to seeing what you do with your mantel.
