Painted Mid Century Desk & Design Challenges

Since the office is completely the bane of my existence and I have attempted to (but never successfully) update the space more times than I can count, I have vowed to myself that 2014 is the year that I will really make a difference in there.

Last week, I reminded you all what my inspiration was for the room and shared a little corner of it. (You can read all about it here). One of the big differences in the room was adding in our painted vintage desk.

We sort of just stumbled upon this desk last spring. I had gone to an estate sale to specifically purchase a dresser, when my husband spotted the desk and convinced me to buy that too. It met all his qualifications of storage, a good amount of workspace and a glass top to protect the finish.

Here's the worst before picture of all time. And those cords. That's what it looks like when my husband's computer is all hooked up. Save me from that disaster with some sort of idea to organize and contain that mess. Get this, my husband is totally OK with it. Gah.

I wanted to go with a simple finish; no distressing and a light, neutral color. I think this gray come out perfectly!

To tie into other aqua accents in the space and to further emphasize the vintage feel of the desk, I added these fantastic jadeite milk glass knobs from D. Lawless Hardware. These are easily one of my favorite knobs I've ever used!

So there you have it. I'm thrilled with the desk, but not sold on the overall flow of the room. Have you ever run into this when updating a space. Give me advice! What did you do to get over the hump?

  2. Your desk is wonderful Angela!!! I love the color especially against that pretty paneled wall. Between the seat cushion and the map above the desk you have added the perfect pops of color! Sometimes what I will do to jump start my creative juices in rearranging a room is to completely empty the room and then start from scratch...I know it sounds like a lot of work but I think it is harder to revamp a room you live in all the time than any other space. Your room already looks like a fun place to work and create!

  3. love the desk, love that grey! Oh and there's my fave chair again - that fabric makes my heart skip a beat! I have a few rooms that are causing me problems right now... and as we speak I am painting my daughter's room pink - after much pressure and deal making - I chose the least offensive shade I could find (that we could agree on), but still, I had to come down and take a little break... pink is NOT my colour and it's hurting my eyes a little (haha - but really it is!). I can't wait to clutter up the walls and hide some of that wall colour!!!

  5. Adorable! Love the knobs, and it looks like you got a nice, smooth finish too. My husband is cord-blind too! It drives me crazy, but he's somehow fine with them EVERYWHERE.
