Grungy White & Burlap

Last week I shared a makeover that I absolutely loved using black paint and burlap (here).  The store that I sell most of my furniture at is country/primitive and the most popular color, by far, is black.

However, there are a couple of additional colors options that I can choose from. Deep country red and mustard yellow are possible choices, as is grungy white. Surprisingly, shades of blue and green do not sell.

I used what I had on hand to refinish two stools in my interpretation of an old, grungy white.

After sanding I painted each piece in Glidden's Dove White.  (I had previously painted the larger stool in leftover emerald green paint not realizing that it was not an option, leaving some small areas of green when distressed).  After the paint dried I distressed it and wiped on some dark walnut stain.  It was a really simple and quick project.  For the smaller stool, I just sanded the top and left it as is.  For the larger stool, I covered the dated 1970s fabric in burlap. I love using burlap in reupholstering!

Here's the larger stool before. (I guess I must not have photographed the smaller one. It's all good though since that transformation wasn't nearly as dramatic.)

Do you love my large brass, fly ash tray? Every home needs a huge brass insect. Seriously.

I love how simple this little stool is. Perfect for a plant or a small stack of books.

I can't believe I actually have been able to photograph outside again. We've been having a few really nice weather days lately. I was beginning to wonder if spring would ever arrive!

I hope you all had a great Easter! Ours was really laid back and for the first time ever I made brunch instead of a big meal. It was way less stress on me and everyone absolutely loved it.

These pieces are also for sale at Village Primitives on Main Street in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.

  6. I like your two pieces but I'm sorry the aqua color doesn't sell well for you (it's very pretty) but a creamy white and burlap is classic...hard to wrong there :)

  16. In can understand the black, the grungy white and the red selling, fascinated that blue and green don't. Love those colors - this transformation looks terrific! I will be featuring your post in this week's Home and Garden Thursday,
