Adding Bold Color in a Neutral Space

Hi Everyone! My house is finally clear of furniture pickups so I thought I would share some pictures of my entry and living rooms with you all. Lately, I've been wanting to add in more bold colors--not crazy amounts, but just little bits of it here and there as accents around the rooms.

I'm still so thrilled that I painted all the walls in our home light, neutral shades of gray. I think this is one of the main reasons that the space can handle pops of color.

Our entry had been looking way too traditional to me, so I simply replaced all the white candles with fun, colorful tapers that I found at Pier 1.  Another reason I wanted to add in some color to this space is that it is diagonal (albeit at the complete opposite end of a large room) from the turquoise dresser in our living room and I wanted to create a sense of balance with the bold colors.

Anyone remember my black, chandelier stenciled Windsor chair I did, maybe in November? It seemed a bit too big for this space so I sold it to a local shop owner for her store. I replaced it with this $3 thrift store find that I washed in a bold chartreuse color and then distressed. (The chartreuse ties in with our upholstered dining chairs in our adjoining dining room and I plan to upholster a ottoman in the same fabric for the living area.)

Believe it or not, the very same day I finished the chair I found this awesome complimentary candle holder at the thrift store. I may of squealed, then paid my $1.99 plus tax and zoomed home to see how it looked with the chair. I love it!

This is my mantel right now. I thought the colors and size of this picture that I found at HomeGoods was perfect for the space.  As you can see it is the only bit of color on the mantel, as everything else is neutral and natural.

Bits of red, pop off of this gallery wall of vintage art that I'm working on.

The gold thrift store chair is still in the room and I still absolutely love it. Everything else in this corner is neutral so as to not compete with it.

Lastly, the turquoise dresser. Maybe my favorite accent color of all time! Again, everything around it is neutral to let this piece shine.

Here's an overview of the space...

Today my plan is to tire the boys out at the playground and then come home and start my kitchen makeover. On the agenda for today is to paint the new shelves we bought for inside the open, upper cabinets. Excited!

  7. Your home is really beautiful, Angela. The pops of colour work well with the neutral background and you have some very interesting pieces. I'm partial to turquoise so the dresser is my favourite piece. The park is always a great spot to wear the little ones out.
