Country Blue Desk & Our Sunday

Hey all. I can truly say that we had an awesome Sunday! Most of you know that my boys have autism and pretty severe anxiety so trying new things are usually not their thing. But, we had promised them a fun Sunday and I came up with the idea that I wanted to take them to the movies. I know this is no big deal, but my boys are 9 1/2 and 11 1/2 and have never been! Between behavior and sensory issues, they also have low vision and are night blind. So, of course I mention this adventure to them, and they come up with about 9,000 reasons why they cannot go, but we pressed ahead (we saw Epic at one of those less expensive theaters that shows the older movies) and they LOVED. EVERY. SECOND. OF IT. So, so proud of them and they are so proud of themselves.

Thanks for letting me share!

Anyway, on to the home stuff. This was a desk I painted for a customer a while back. She wanted blue and lightly distressed.

This is another one of those example where I would have gone in a totally different direction color wise, but I just love what she picked!

Here it is before, not technically bad, but just very ordinary and dated.

I did a darker blue as a base coat and sanded and then randomly dry brushed a lighter blue on top. Love the subtle aged look this technique gives it!  I also switched out the original hardware for these cute black knobs I found at Hobby Lobby.

Lastly, and here are a couple of pictures from yesterday before the movie (we treated the boys to gelato). Also another first since our youngest has tons of food allergies, but seems to have outgrown the dairy one. Yeah!

And, don't you love how kids get excited about the most mundane things. Seriously, they made me bring home these little spoons so they can use them again!

Ignore the no makeup, dark circle look. It was 95 degrees and I had a horrible sore throat!

Have a great Monday!

  3. So happy to hear your boys had a great time at the movies for the first time!! The other night I met up with my daughter and grandkids at the movie for the 3D version of the new Despicable Me 2 movie. When one of the 10 yr old grandsons got there he told his mom "you did NOT tell me this was 3D". (He also has sensory issues). He did agree to stay and give it a try.
Although his fingers were at his ears the whole time "just in case", he eventually put on his glasses and said he enjoyed the movie. :D BTW-He has absolutely no problem MAKING loud noises. lol

  4. The color you selected is very pretty and such an improvement! It looks like everyone this week (so far on Met Monday) is into color! Hope you'll come see DD2's MBR makeover.

  6. Hi Angela (that's my daughter's name) you look adorable and so does your family. Oh, that's a wonderful transformation on the little table. I've seen that style before and would have just walked on past it. I've got to look more with 'redo' eyes!
    Be a sweetie,

  8. Oh the table is so pretty, but I love the outing with the boys. You are such an angel from heaven and they are such special gifts. Sounds like a fun day. We have a granddaughter with MD, so I am totally aware of the special needs some have and how much time and patience it takes. God Bless. Thanks so much for linking to Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty

  10. What a great story and an adventure for the boys. Glad they had such fun and brought their spoons home. Truth be told my husband thinks they are so cool and brings them home for a bit and throws them away after a wile.

The piece that you painted is so pretty, love the color!

  13. I just randomly came across your blog and absolutely had to comment. Your work is so beautiful and unique, im in love. I just recently got into mixed media art/altering/collaging/ making ugly stuff pretty, but on a much smaller scale due to space restrictions. You are quite inspirational with both your creativity and parenting. As a mother i have complete respect for you. Someone up there knew youd be able to handle it, as many could never do it as gracefully. If you ever find yourself overwhelmed (which i am on a daily basis), just remember how special your boys are and how special and strong you are to be chosen as thier mama. I wish you all the happiness in the world and i think im going to have to bookmark ya for when i need creative inspiration.
