Antique Side Table Redo

I have always loved the lines of this table and when I saw it in my Mom's tag sale pile I snatched it up for myself.  She had previously had this on her enclosed porch, but decided to go with more greens and neutrals this year. It all worked out great since she ended up taking a vintage end table that I had recently painted emerald.

Anyway, here are some before shots. I love the lines, but not so much the paint. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the red is actually spray paint that was kind of randomly layered on.  This piece looks like it had been painted many, many, many times as I could see layers of black, white and yellow peeking out.

Don't you just love those tall, skinny legs and how the cabinet opens?

Honestly, when I paint a piece of furniture I tend to gravitate towards black. You all know how neutral my house is and there is just something about black furniture that is so classic.  I started off by giving the table a good sanding (obviously).

I had some leftover black paint from previous projects and just mixed it with some warm water and unsanded grout to make my own chalk paint.  I like this method for DIY chalk paint, but frankly, I've never tried any other the other formulas because once you get a box of unsanded grout it pretty much lasts for eternity.

So, after I gave the table two good coats of paint it looked a little bit too perfect.  I mean, obviously this is an old piece of furniture.  It has a bit of a wobble and the solid painted finish just didn't seem to jive. I decided to give the piece a light sanding, which brought out all the previous paint colors.

I love it now. I think it is still extremely neutral and shows off the fabulous lines of the piece, while still sharing its history and all the layers of paint its had.

I'm thinking this little table looks pretty fantastic in our master bedroom. And yes, I am aware that I just refinished a nightstand for my husband (seen here), but the color and details of this table is just perfect.

What do you think?  (Here's a reminder of the table that I have on my side of the bed. I totally think they compliment each other beautifully.)

And fantastic news on the other side table that I had made over.  It sold almost immediately on craigslist with a pretty good profit for me!   I think that was the fifth piece of furniture that I have redone that has sold the same week I've listed it.  And, I might have some other sales opportunities in the works. I'll share soon.
