Shabby White Secretary

Happy Sunday (and Father's Day)! I'm hoping for a part relaxing/part getting things accomplished kind of day. The weather is finally nice so it would be great to spend time outdoors, plus, I have several furniture projects that are like 99% done and just need one tiny thing to complete them. I hate having mostly finished things lying around!

Several weeks ago I found this secretary with drawers at Savers. I was super excited since it was a great, solid piece that just needed a little love (and to lose its horrible, shiny finish)!

Don't you love the feet?

This piece actually sold immediately on my Number Fifty-Three facebook page as is and I custom painted it shabby white for a local customer who was in the process of opening her own shop and wanted to use this as her checkout station.

She asked for a distressed shabby white with black hardware.  She also purchased my black Windsor chair with the chandelier stencil on it so I knew I wanted to incorporate some gray to tie in the stencil.

Hobby Lobby knobs...I just love having one nearby now!

I simply updated the sorter inside with some black spray paint to freshen it up and unify it with the hardware and chair.

Here are some before pictures. Kind of ugly, but full of potential!

After some major amounts of sanding and adhesion priming (really, that was a ridiculously glossy surface) I painted it a soft gray (Behr's Classic Silver) and then white (Behr's Falling Snow).  To give it the shabby, worn look I was after I sanded it both by hand and with the electric sander and finished with a coat of wax.

I really love when a customer picks their own colors because it, often times, pushes me out of my comfort zone to try something new. I don't think I ever would have considered shabby white for this if I wasn't asked, but I love the relaxed vibe it gives to such a classic piece!

What do you think?
