The Perfect Red Vintage Dresser

I always feel like everything happens for a reason. Like every good thing and struggle is there to teach us something or give us some sort of opportunity. I even carry this over to shopping. A lot of times I will have trouble deciding on whether or not I want something and I won't initially buy it. Then, if I go back another day and it is still there and I've really been thinking about it then I know it was meant to be. (A totally risky thing when we're talking about thrift store merchandise, right!)

Anyhow, a couple of months ago my husband had a random Friday off and I decided to treat him to lunch a few towns away and then run some errands on the way home. One of the things that my husband wanted to do was stop in at a thrift store. I initially wasn't on board (I know, weird, right?) But, I never have had luck at that particular store, didn't want to waste time and such, but my husband claimed he had a good feeling about it.

Boy was he right. I found this gorgeous, little beauty. Best of all, it had been there for over a month, so they marked it down 50%. Score!

My Mom immediately scooped this one up for herself (she had been wanting a new dresser for her bedroom for a while now) and then it proceeded to sit in my garage. And she would periodically stop by and see me painting custom pieces, crafting, decorating, and patiently waiting until I had the time to work on her dresser.

And, just like how I believe everything works out for a reason, so did this. See, my Mom had initially, kind of half hearted told me to paint it cream. She wasn't sold on the color, but nothing was jumping out at her. Until the day that I got a box of fantastic new paint colors from General Finishes Paint Company. She spotted this Holiday Red and just knew that was it!

Oh my gosh, I wish you could all see this one in person. It is so incredibly pretty. I painted two coats (don't be shocked by how bright it is when wet if you decide to use this color...you really, really should use this color), because it dries to the perfect true red.  And, I often find, that a perfect true red is difficult to achieve. (And look at that top! It opens up and has additional storage and a mirror!)

Here's the before, just another piece with pretty lines and an old worn finish.

And one final picture. Love.

Thank you so much for stopping by!

  17. Red I would never have thought of that color but it looks great on your dresser.
I'll have to keep red in mind when thinking of a color for a piece of furniture.

  19. You had me at RED.

What lovely lines the piece has and kudos to you for recognizing its potential.

I was looking for a new piece of furniture for the living room I found a dresser I liked at my favorite antique store, but I didn't want to buy the first thing I saw. I went to about 7 more shops, but my thoughts kept going back to that first dresser. Fortunately, it was there and now sits in my living room. Perhaps my dresser will end up red.

  21. Angela, you did a fantastic job on this chest. Red is a bold choice, but so perfect in this case. The lines and color blend together so well. You have a piece with pizzazz and style. Great work. Ann Marie @ Iris Abbey

  24. I love that high boy so much, the color is rich. Wonder if you put little bit of pink and maybe some yellow in that red you'd get a gorgeous coral color. Love the top also, the old stuff is so much better than new, they had the extra things so your furniture worked for you. Don't ever find things like that in g.j. area, if I did it would be so expensive. You did a gorgeous job on that high boy. I'd never heard of that brand of paint, must be an area brand. I'll have to look them up. Did you put wax or anything over paint? I'm sure envious of your Mom getting that chest.
I guess I'm kind of lucky also, my hubs will go to our local thrift store, others in Grand Junction once I get him out and he sees what treasures I find. Usually won't buy a book anymore unless I can get it at our local thrift store, 25cents for paperbacks and 50cents for hardbacks. I got a book today at Goodwill, $2.99? eeekk but I needed a book.
Hubs especially loves going to our Habitat and it's a ways from our house in G.J. We live west of G.J. about 18 miles so going to Habitat is close to 30 miles, he finds great stuff for me also. We'll be in that place for hours and we usually go on days they have veterans and seniors discounts. I find better furniture buys at Habitat. I do envy you gals in mid west and east coast for the bargains you find. We used to live in Western KY (Bowling Green area), so many incredible places and shows to buy things. Nothing like that here and people here do not like distressed at all. Climate in KY didn't agree with me at all, why we had to move away. Had good antique/vintage places in MT where we lived before KY, outside Helena. They had antique/vintage shows all the time, ah what treasures I'd find, craft shows also. Happy weekend

Thanks ahead of time. Please reply at: FurryKidzPaperworx@gmail.com Happy weekend I did find out there's a store that sells paint you used in Grand Junction, yeahoo.
