Budget Christmas Decorating

If you're like me and you love to decorate (and redecorate) then you always have this tiny, annoying, little thing called a budget looming over you. Right?

This is especially true around the Christmas season when there is so much to do and so many other expenses. Yet, I always want to create fresh and new holiday displays around my home. What am I to do! Well, I have created a little system filled with tips to decorate beautifully on a Christmas budget.

First, use older holiday items in a new way. For example, I have an extensive collection of vintage ornaments (all found for free or just a couple of dollars a box at tag sales) that, some years, completely decorate my tree. This year, I have used them differently, piled in a vintage bowl in my entry. It gives them a totally new and unexpected look!

Secondly, purchase inexpensive filler ornaments. You all have seen these before. They are the large boxes of plastic ornaments at the less expensive stores. Use these as your foundation and then top with your more expensive (or special) ornaments.  See the gold ornaments in the basket? Those are super cheap, but you wouldn't know when they are layered with pretty, vintage, glass ornaments.

Tip: Wait to buy these on clearance at the end of the season or look for deals, plus coupons to buy them now. That's what my husband did last year and only spent a few dollars on a huge assortment.

Third, bring nature inside. This is forever a favorite of mine, regardless of the season. Things like boxwood, sticks and pinecones are all good options for Christmas. I added a sprig of boxwood to this brass container in my living room for a natural element in this holiday vignette.

Fourth, use one decoration as a focal point. For example, one beautiful ornament balanced on a container can have a major impact and really highlight a sentimental piece.

Lastly, make something crafty! I had a large amount of space to fill on my tree and couldn't justify the cost of all the ornaments needed so I crafted a filler. I just took some tags purchased at the office supply store and painted fun patterns on them with metallic gold craft paint.

Next week I'm be teaming up with over 50 other bloggers to share our holiday home tours! I'm super excited and hope you'll all follow along!

Also, be sure to check out my series called Inspiring Bloggers and, this past week Meeha Meeha shared some fantastic decorating ideas with us all.  You can see her entire post here.
